Beat the Heat
Equipment to keep your pups cool.
We often get asked in our sport dog classes how we keep our dogs cool while waiting at trials etc? What are the silver sheets we use on the cars for?
Below is a list of items dog competitors use to help keep their cars cool while at competitions or camping etc. However none are suitable to leave in a sealed car with no air flow. Please use your discretion with these items.
Shade cloths, at least 70% reflection. Amazon or Bravepoint. I have some available 7x12’s available as well.
Vent locks allow you to keep your hatch open but not allow people to unlock your car.
Fans. Most people use Ryobi as the fans are cheap but the batteries get pricey. If you're like me and your spouse has every power tool ever, DeWalt makes great fans and you can use their power tool 20v batteries. These USB rechargeable fans work really well for crates. Or try a misting fan and be the hit of the trial or campsite.
Cooling mats for inside their crates or to lay around the house. Be careful they don't eat the gel inside them though!
Cooling coats, cooling Harness, bandanas etc. I've been very happy with my Hurtta cooling vests but there are lots of similar ones out there. I found this neck gaiter worked really well for Jet in 30 degree heat at a scent work trial in the summer.
These are all very helpful for the times you have to have your dog with you. However, always monitor your pups for signs of heat exhaustion.
